There is no single best input, because the inputs are good at different moments. A massing model or concept sketch suits the stage where the question is still whether the idea works. A floor plan or elevation suits the stage where the layout is settled and the question is how it will feel. A photograph suits work on a building that already exists.
What consistently helps, whichever you use: clean legible line work, a stated room or building type rather than one left to be inferred, and a reference image when you have a specific material or atmosphere in mind.
What consistently hurts is an input carrying information the model will misread — annotation and dimension strings across the drawing, several unrelated drawings on one sheet, or a heavily marked-up print. Give it the drawing, not the drawing sheet.
