Both plain concept sketches and painted or shaded sketches work as rendering inputs. The drawing does not need to be measured or clean.
Sketches are a strong input precisely because they are ambiguous. A sketch communicates intent — massing, a roofline, the way light enters — while leaving detail unresolved, and detail is what the model is good at supplying. A hard-lined CAD drawing gives the model less room and can produce a stiffer result.
The practical use is speed of iteration in early design. You can sketch a direction, see it rendered, and decide whether the idea holds before committing hours to modelling it.
