Two mechanisms do the work. A reference image communicates a target material, palette, or atmosphere far more precisely than a written description. And a saved setup lets a configuration that produced a good result be reapplied rather than rebuilt from memory.
The reason saved setups matter more than they sound is consistency across a set. A single striking image is easy; ten images that read as one project, by different people over several weeks, is the hard part — and that is a question of reusing the same settings rather than of anyone’s skill at describing them.
What a reference cannot do is change geometry. It constrains how a form is finished and lit, not what the form is. If the output has the wrong shape, the fix is in the input drawing.
