Does AI rendering replace designers?
No. It removes the production work around design, not the design decisions.
What AI rendering automates is the production of images: modelling, materialling, lighting, waiting on a render queue. That work is time-consuming and largely mechanical, and very little of it is the part a designer trained for.
What it does not do is decide. Which direction is worth testing, whether a proportion is right, how a space should be used, what a client actually needs — none of these are in the image, and a model with no stake in the project cannot supply them. An AI render is an answer to a question someone else had to pose.
The observable effect on a practice is a change in where hours go, not a reduction in headcount: fewer hours spent operating tools and waiting, more spent on options that previously would not have been explored because rendering each one was too expensive.
